The bodies of two young lovers who drowned in a river in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, have been buried by the side of the river they both died.
It was gathered that the couple, identified as Kess andOnoriode, drowned in the Ekpan River while they were having a romantic rendezvous and their decomposing bodies were recovered by divers who were contracted by the communities’ leaders.
They were buried beside each other at the spot from where they jumped into the river, with their burial rites preceded by a short traditional service, which excluded women and girls in line with Urhobo customs.
A youth leader, Pastor Leader Nimogha, an uncle of the male, Kess, told reporters that the deaths of the lovers were unfortunate.
“It is very unfortunate that the two promising lovers ended this way. There is no doubt that the tragedy is as a result of youthful exuberance. They chose to express their love in a dangerous manner because they couldn’t swim.”
It was gathered that the boy, Kess, had invited Onoriode to meet him at the riverside for their usual romantic evening and was the first said to have entered the river first and persuaded Onoriode to join him. But they were said to have suddenly disappeared shortly after entering the river.
But there were conflicting accounts of how they drowned as another source said  that  Kess was trying to teach his girlfriend how to swim, while another claimed that they died after Onoriode fell into the water and Kess made a futile attempt to rescue her.
